Full Vehicle Wrap vs. Partial Vehicle Wrap: Which is Right for Your Business?

Back to Blog Posts

Investing in a vehicle wrap can be a great way to turn heads on the streets and drive more brand awareness.

When it comes to vehicle wraps, there are a few different coverage options:

  • Full Wrap – Full coverage of exterior painted surfaces on the vehicle
  • Partial Wrap – Partial coverage, typically on sides/front/rear of the vehicle
  • Decal – Smaller graphics, generally placed on the sides/rear/hood of the vehicle

There are several factors you should consider when purchasing a vehicle wrap. While budget can play a major factor, there are many other things you'll want to take into account before making your decision.

What is your budget?

One of the first things to consider when looking at vehicle wrap options is your budget. Factors that could influence your wrap cost include:

  • Size and complexity of the vehicle
  • Amount of coverage
  • Installation time
  • Design costs

While full wraps provide more coverage and more impact, higher coverage means higher costs upfront.

A partial wrap may be a better option for businesses with a smaller budget. But it's important to note that lower cost doesn't mean no impact. Partial wraps are still a great way to brand your vehicle and grab attention while you're on the road.

What color is your vehicle?

The color of the vehicle you want to wrap may also influence your coverage decision.

If your brand colors complement the original color of the vehicle, a partial wrap can be a great way to blend the graphics with the color of the vehicle.

However, if the original color of your vehicle doesn't complement your brand's colors, you may want to consider a full wrap that will cover that surface area with colors and graphics that better represent your brand.

How much visual impact do you want to make?

If making a visual impact on the road is important to you, you may want to consider a full wrap that gives you the coverage to tell your full brand story.

While partial coverage is still a great cost-effective option for driving brand awareness, it doesn't offer the same level of visual impact as a full wrap.

How concerned are you with sun fading?

Full coverage means more protection.

Since the wrap covers the entire painted surface of the vehicle, it helps prevent those UV rays from getting through and sun-fading the paint of the vehicle. This may be particularly helpful for leased fleet vehicles.

On the other hand, partial wraps protect only the areas they are covering. This can result in ghosting – where you can still see the outline of the graphics on the surface after they are removed, because the surface around the graphic faded while the surface under the graphic did not.

Is durability important to you?

Since partial wraps don't always cover the entire panel from seam to seam, there are often exposed edges.

These exposed edges can be more prone to lifting.

If you're concerned with the durability of your graphics, a full wrap may be a better option for you. Since the wrap completely covers the painted surface of your vehicle, the vinyl wrap can be tucked into seams. This means fewer exposed edges, and less risk of vinyl lifting.

How much downtime can the vehicle have?

More coverage means more installation time. This is more time your vehicle may be down and out of use while the wrap is being installed.

If having your vehicle out of service for a couple of days isn't in the cards for you, a partial wrap that requires less installation time may be a better fit.

So, which option is best for me?

A full wrap may be best if you:

  • Want to maximize the visual impact your graphics make
  • Have a vehicle color that clashes with your branding
  • Want additional paint protection from sun fading

A partial wrap may be best if you:

  • Have a smaller budget
  • Have a vehicle color that works well with your branding
  • Don't have the downtime for a full wrap installation
  • Want a clean, minimal look that still drives results
